China, a country with a population of over 1.4 billion people, is the most populous nation in the world. Experiencing the hustle and bustle of such a vibrant culture was eye-opening. I had no idea what that would feel like, let alone look like… Each moment was filled with new sights, sounds, and interactions that were far removed from my daily life. It was overwhelming at times, and I learned to breathe deeply and go with the flow… I found myself captivated by the rhythm of life around me, where every corner held a new adventure. Literally, going with the flow of millions of people.
China is highly modern in its technology, with trains traveling at 350 km per hour beneath a mountainside. In this environment of rapid growth and change, the blend of ancient traditions and modernity was striking. It’s socially stable, and I felt very safe walking around the streets in the cities.
The food in China is vastly different from what is often labeled as Chinese food in the West… You don’t need upscale places; the street food is fresh and bursting with flavors, especially at the night markets and from street vendors… YUM! Fried dumplings are a favorite, along with soft shell crab.
From steaming bowls of noodles at food stalls to aromatic barbecue skewers, every bite was an exploration of flavors.
A highlight among many was the GREAT WALL, which stands as an extraordinary testament to ancient engineering and architectural brilliance. This magnificent structure is not merely a wall; it is an impressive defense system that spans vast distances, stretching gracefully across picturesque mountains and deep valleys. This remarkable feat of construction showcases the incredible ingenuity and resourcefulness of the civilization that built it, illustrating not only their ability to overcome natural obstacles but also their ambition and vision for protection against invaders.
It was even more special as George, our knowledgeable guide, expertly got us there before the next 50 plus buses filled with tourists arrived, allowing us to experience this awe-inspiring wonder in relative solitude and appreciate its grandeur without the usual crowds. This ensured that our visit was not only memorable but also deeply personal, giving us time to fully absorb the history and significance of this incredible landmark.
